About my sister Sar...

Today, rather than blab about my usual adventures in Romania, this post is a little different. This post is an all about my favorite sister Sar because it is her birthday today. (Sorry James and Dan, don't be mad that I didn't post about you on your birthdays). About my sister...

Sar is my only sister. She has put up with me from the time that we shared a room with peach colored carpet and white trundle beds. I always wanted to be like her. I loved the days when she would clean out her room listening to Sarah McLachlin music and let me browse all of her "junk" so that I could redecorate my room with her old porcelain dolls, posters, picture frames and young women's crafts. Don't get me wrong, we had our differences. I remember telling my parents when Sar was going through her teenage years that I would NEVER let my room get so messy with clothes and I would NEVER talk on the phone to boys for 3-4 hours at a time. Well, I grew up and followed in her footsteps!

Sarah sewed me my kindergarten outfit - a sunflower dress with a giant fake sunflower on the front. It was my favorite dress. She also gave me my first hand me down JCrew sweater in 7th grade that I absolutely loved because I thought I was more mature with a striped v-neck Jcrew on. I definitely wore it for picture day. Sarah also had a secret desire to go to hair school. She was always french braiding my hair, braiding it in weird designs, curling it, braiding it Jamaican style for girls camp and doing it for all my school dances.

Because Sar was a tomboy, I wanted to be a tomboy. I wanted to be outdoorsy just like she was and I wanted to be able to play sports like she did. I refused to wear makeup all through junior high and for my first two years of high school. Why you say? Because Sar didn't think makeup was cool, therefore I didn't think it was either.

I remember bawling when Sar went to school in Rexburg because I didn't know how I would survive life with just brothers at home. I remember bawling when she left on her mission for the same reasons. I have always looked up to my sister and have always wanted to be just like her. We are still very different. Sarah isn't afraid of anything. She can move to China and find her way around with a 5 month old child and not be afraid. Sarah isn't afraid to attempt 50 milers or run to the top of mountains. Sar is a permanent EFY counselor and can entertain anyone. She also can do things last minute - whereas I have to plan everything in advance.

For the past few years as I have been figuring my own life out, Sarah has become my best friend. She is there for me when I need to tell her about my boy problems. We like to go shopping together because our shopping only lasts about an hour and we have a slight obsession with TJMaxx. She is there to tell me that I don't need to be scared and to help me with everything because she has done it before. We like going to get frozen rootbeer floats from Wendy's late at night and she still likes to watch chick flicks with me, including Anne of Green Gables because we both secretly love Gilbert Blythe.

No matter how many times you have asked me before - I still think you are "awesome" Sar. Thanks for being my best friend and sister. Thanks for being my backpacking buddy and my running partner. Hope you have a fantastic birthday. I'm sorry that I am not there for you to wear the "attention antlers" and tell you how awesome you are - hence, I hope that this post will suffice. :)
