Tomorrow we meet the kids...

Today was not a super eventful day. We took the two new girls to get some groceries and to the mall. We also found a place to develop pictures and a Kinko’s type copy store (fabulous)!

Tonight, I called Mario to see what the plan was for tomorrow. She got our approval to work in the orphanage tomorrow. We can work in the hospital now as well, but I think we are going to start on Monday. Mario thought the orphanage would be a lot to take in the first two days.

After I got off the phone with her, I pulled out the child writeups from past interns. I am nervous about working tomorrow. I hope that I am ready and prepared. I was reading through all of their histories and about 99% of the kids have at least 2 or more disabilities. Some have cerebral palsy, fetal alchohol syndrome, autism, epilepsy, attachment disorder, downsyndrome, hydroencephalus – the list goes on. For many of them, their social info said – both parents still living. dropped him/her off and have never returned to visit.

This isn’t the typical travel down to South America and work in an orphanage and play with the kids. These children are severely developmentally disabled.  I know that I'm going to have to go in with the mindset that I can’t fix everything, but I can help these kids in small increments and hopefully bring some joy to them as well.  I am here not merely to find friends in the branch, not as just a traveling experience and not just to get away, but I am here for one reason – the kids. Thinking back to all of the miracles that have occurred alone just to get me here, there is not a doubt in my mind that I, Jessie Maughan, am supposed to be here with these kids. I hope that I am humble enough to learn from them because they truly are Heavenly Father’s precious children.

Noapte buna – goodnight.
