Fantastic friday...

I had the new worker Maryanna today who I have only had once. She is a fantastic worker. Unlike some of the other ones, she sits in the same room with them and just plays with them. You can tell that she is working for the kids and that she really loves them. It helps me to see her interact because with my limited language, I’m not able to do as much. I am always surprised when she comes and plays with the kids and how smart they really are. Sometimes I think they are just mumbling or babbling, but when she talks to them, I can understand the Romanian a little more. I brought balloons today for all of the kids. It was like an early Christmas for them – they were so excited. Each balloon I pulled out, I had all of the boys in front of me with their hands up asking if this one was for them!

She and I took the kids to the park today. It was one of those perfect days – the kids are completely happy and love being outside and it was good to be able for them to have the space to run and chase each other, to pick up sticks, to chase birds…all of the things that little kids should be able to do. I walked around with V because he usually picks up things he isn’t supposed to (and doesn’t know any better), so it’s best if someone can keep him busy and moving. He was smiling and laughing as we would chase the other kids, even though he walks crooked and is constantly stumbling. I could tell he was having fun. As I was with him, I couldn’t help but be grateful that I am a part of this – a part of making these children happy and to be able to witness miracles. Reading the past writeups about my kids, realizing that both G and V couldn’t walk and probably weren’t supposed to. Because someone has worked with them (the past interns), I am running around a park with them and letting them laugh and be happy like children should be – that is miraculous. Today was one of those days when I wish it didn’t have to end.

To top off a great day, Kala and I went to watch our first movie here in Romania. We weren’t sure if it was going to be in English with Romanian subtitles or vise versa. Definitely English with Romanian subtitles – booya! I was about halfway through the movie when I heard the people behind me speak Romanian and I realized that I had completely forgotten I was here, because it just seemed like I was at a movie at home with my friends. I will say – the theatre was fantastic. You pick out the actual seats before hand when you get your tickets printed (like you would at a concert). Then, when we went in, we had a guy escort us to our seats (may not have been a normal thing, but they probably noticed that we were clueless!), and as soon as the movie finished, the escort was at the front holding a giant trash container and everyone walked down the isle with their garbage and threw it away. I didn’t see any popcorn, empty candy wrappers or anything on the ground. The seats were super comfortable.

Today was a great day.
